Autumn is a season of change. Beat writer's block and find creative writing inspiration with these fall-inspired prompts for writers.

Fall is a time of transition and change. It's a great season to recharge your writing. Here are ten creative writing prompts to help inspire your creativity, develop your characters and overcome writer's block.

  • Write a one-page short story using one, some or all of the following words: "orange", "leaves", "crisp", "harvest", "candy" and "cranberry."
  • What is your favourite or most outstanding autumn memory? What made it so memorable?
  • It's Halloween and your character's doorbell is rung by a group of trick-or-treaters. How does your character react? What thoughts run through your character's mind? Is this even a likely scenario for your character to experience? Describe why.
  • As a transitional season, fall evokes many feelings about things such as the passage of time and the life cycles of nature. Write a few paragraphs about how autumn makes you feel or what it makes you consider.
  • Imagine your character receives an invitation to a Thanksgiving dinner. Who is inviting your character? How does she or he respond to the invitation? If your character does not attend, write about what he or she does that evening instead. If your character does attend, how does the evening unfold?
  • Autumn is back-to-school time for students in many places around the world. Write about your most memorable first day of school. Describe the setting, the people around you and what made the day so memorable for you. Does it still affect you today?
  • Imagine if we used apples as currency instead of paper money and change. How would the world be different if money literally grew on trees? How would nature be affected? How would fall, when apples are in season, be significant?
  • Freewrite for five minutes using the phrase, "I grabbed the rake and turned around quickly . . ."
  • What rituals do you have as autumn arrives and the temperature begins getting cooler? What comforting items do you cook, bake or wear? Write about your fall rituals and where they started.
  • Your protagonist is on a farm helping with a harvest. Write a few paragraphs about what your character is doing, what his or her mood is and how she or he ended up there.

Fall is a cozy season, perfect for spending time at your writing desk with a cup of warm apple cider. Use these ten easy autumn writing prompts to help you along your way. Open your writing notebook or laptop and let the season inspire your creative writing and deepen your character development.
