Find writing inspiration and beat writer's block this spring using elements of the season.

The new beginnings of spring are the perfect environment to inspire your creativity and writing inspiration. Below are ten springtime-inspired writing prompts to help you come up with story ideas, develop your characters and keep your creativity working all season long.

  • What are your two favourite elements of spring? What are your two least favourite? Write about why you feel this way.
  • Write a one-page short story using one or all of the following words: "bird, splash, green, awoken, umbrella, nest."
  • One of your neighbours, an avid gardener, knocks on your door. You let him in and, looking nervous, he begins to tell you about what he discovered growing in his garden. "I had no idea that could even be grown in a garden!" he says. Write about what he is growing, and the conversation you have.
  • You are doing a long-overdue spring cleaning of your house. In your basement you find a small box tucked away in a corner. It is marked "Do Not Open." However, it is very old and the tape holding it shut has broken open. Write about what you do.
  • Freewrite for five minutes using the phrase, "The rain seemed like it would never stop . . ."
  • One of your characters was born on April 1st - April Fool's Day. Write about his or her most memorable birthday and how it has affected your character's life or personality.
  • Spring is a season of transition. The winter snow is melting and the trees and flowers of summer are beginning to come to life. Write about the biggest transition in your own life, whether it be in the past or still to come.
  • Your main character receives an invitation to go on a Spring Break cruise. Who is inviting your character? What is your character's response to the invitation, and why?
  • Two of your characters are out for a springtime walk in the woods and soon realize they are lost. Write about what made them get lost, and what happens next.
  • One spring day you notice a rabbit sitting in a field. It begins to hop toward you. Suddenly, you discover you and the rabbit are able to communicate with each other. Write about what happens next.

Spring is a season of rejuvenation and growth and it's the perfect time for developing new creative writing ideas. Open your writer's notebook and use these spring writing prompts to inspire your creativity.
